Keep Searching For Yes

September 21, 2014

“No” is not a negative. “No” is neutral. Keep searching for the “Yes-es” in your life. -Jen McGowan

A few nights ago, I had the pleasure of attending LUNAFEST 2014. It started out with a swanky reception for the VIPs to mingle and nosh on yummy hors d’oeuvres. I had the delight of meeting the lovely ladies of Linqia (hi, girls!) and a few other Bay Area bloggers!

The event continued with several different speakers, including the co-founder of Clif bars, Kit Crawford, and Jen McGowan, the award-winning film producer of Kelly & Cal. Her speech was so inspiring and encouraged all women to “keep searching for the yes-es” in their life, no matter how many times they’ve been rejected.

After the speeches, they aired eight short films directed by women about women. Some were funny, some were sad, and every single one was poignant and thought-provoking. After watching these short films, I was inspired to think about the women game-changers in my own life. That’s why this post is dedicated to my Mom – my number one role model and number one fan! :)

Mom, I appreciate you more than I can express in words. You have been an incredible role model and my number one cheerleader! Thank you for raising me to value my intelligence and independence, and always focusing on my accomplishments rather than my appearance. You taught me that it’s cool to be smart (3 years of math & science camp, say what?) and instilled in me a strong sense of morality. I am so grateful for everything you do!

Check out the trailer for LUNAFEST 2014 and see if it will be coming to a city near you!

Who has inspired you in your own life?

XO, J

Thank you to LUNA Bar for sponsoring this post and for inviting me to LUNAFEST! All opinions expressed are my own.

The film festival—by, for, and about women—has not only raised 2.5 million dollars to date for the Breast Cancer Fund and other nonprofits around the country but is also rare in that it is one of the few recognized and heralded avenues reserved for women filmmakers, and enables them to get their films out into the world and to impact and inspire other women filmmakers and their audiences. LUNAFEST is created and funded by LUNA®, the maker of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women®.

A Funny Thing Happened…

September 18, 2014

just be cool You guys, the most hilARIOUS thing happened to me at work the other day. One of the guys in the office was leaving for the night and said “Bye” as he was walking out. I replied, “Have a good night,” to which he said, “You too, love you.” After realizing what he said, he ran out without making eye contact. HAHA! SO embarrassing! It reminds me of when I used to waitress and would say, “Enjoy” to customers and they would reply, “You, too.”

Share an embarrassing/hilarious work story of your own in the comments below!

P.S. Happy birthday to my awesome brother, Kyle! Thanks for following through with every silly little request I have for this blog! :)

Fall Essential: The Cozy Sweater

September 15, 2014

Fall is upon us which means that it is officially sweater weather! There is nothing cozier than bundling up in a deliciously soft sweater and taking a walk on a crisp, fall afternoon. I’m looking forward to incorporating a few into my weekly workwear rotation. Check out my picks below (all $60 and under)!

Uniqlo: $40; ASOS: $40; H&M: $60; Lou & Grey: $50

I’ve already picked up two of the Uniqlo fine-gauge cashmere sweaters (in black and gray) and might not be able to control my urge to buy my other three picks. Sweater weather is the best time of year!

A Week in Maine (Part II)!

September 10, 2014

Hi! I wanted to share with you the second half of my photos from my trip to Maine. The trip wasn’t long enough, but thankfully we crammed in as many fun things as we could in 3 days. It was really weird going back to the place where I lived and worked for my whole life for a vacation. It was also weird going back to a place I’d normally vacation to go back to work. When you move to a new place, suddenly everything gets flipped upside down! It was so great to see my family and spend time with my parents and brother. Below are some photos from my trip if you’d like to see!

We stopped in Portland to grab a bite at my old stomping ground, Becky’s Diner! That fried Maine shrimp is so darn tasty.

My mom made homemade crepes with wild Maine blueberries and strawberries for breakfast. With the time change, I was barely awake to appreciate them – ha!

A gorgeous (but windy) day spent kayaking on the lake! The water was choppy but it was still a good time.

RED HOT DOGS! My ultimate guilty pleasure. The fact that you can’t get them anywhere but Maine makes me crave them even more.

Still had time to sneak a nap in the hammock that afternoon. ;)

A Week in Maine! (Part I)

September 2, 2014

A couple of weeks ago, I went back home to Maine for a few days to visit my friends and family. I spent a blissful few days at my friend Catherine’s lake house in Shapleigh. It was so wonderful to catch up with my girls and relax by the water. Below are a few photos from my trip if you’re interested!
